Book Review: A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
My Review: A Great and Terrible Beauty transport you to another time, another era. An era where women were expected to have certain qualities and their own goal in life is to find a sophisticated husband of wealthy means and to bare his children. Girls are sent to finishing school to be trained in the ways of a proper lady- suppressing their needs and wants and learning to obey the commands of men and the rest of the uptight society.
But four girls didn't think all that highly of being proper, not at all. Felicity, Pippa, Ann, and Gemma stumble upon magic that's so real and thrilling, they come to believe them above the rules set before them by society. With a single touch of the runes, they are able to bring the power to the real world- an intoxicating thought that goes to their heads, even after being warned of the dangers of what so much power can do.
This novel is filled with magic and marvels. Old friendships are abandoned as new friendships are made- whether the person is or isn't of the same class- friendships that are bound with magic and secrets. Desire and rebellious spirits spring forth from young girls, along with magic that fulfill those desires, if only for a short time. Don't forget about the temptation from darkness.
A Great and Terrible Beauty is not a novel that should be passed up, but an adventure to another time and another world that is captivating. I would definitely recommend this book to others. 4/5 STARS
