Tiggy and Cheerio

Meet Tiggy (left) and Cheerio (right), my new hamsters (They love being in their little igloo home).  Tiggy and Cheerio are Roborovski hamsters- the smallest and fastest of the hamster family.  They're so small and cute, and very hard to hold on to when they want to run.  Their fur is so silky soft that and seems to help them escape between the fingers.

Book Review: Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series (The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan's Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, The Last Olympian)

About the Books:

The Lightning Thief: Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse-Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy's mom finds out, she knows it's time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he'll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends -- one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena -- Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

The Sea of Monsters: After a summer spent trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson finds his seventh-grade school year unnervingly quiet. His biggest problem is dealing with his new friend, Tyson—a six-foot-three, mentally challenged homeless kid who follows Percy everywhere, making it hard for Percy to have any “normal” friends. But things don’t stay quiet for long. Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: the magical borders which protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only safe haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters. To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner by the Cyclops Polyphemus on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters, the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millennia—only today, the Sea of Monsters goes by a new name…the Bermuda Triangle. Now Percy and his friends—Grover, Annabeth, and Tyson—must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclopes by the end of the summer or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed. But first, Percy will learn a stunning new secret about his family—one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon’s son is an honor or simply a cruel joke

The Titan's Curse: When the goddess Artemis goes missing, she is believed to have been kidnapped. And now it’s up to Percy and his friends to find out what happened. Who is powerful enough to kidnap a goddess? They must find Artemis before the winter solstice, when her influence on the Olympian Council could swing an important vote on the war with the titans. Not only that, but first Percy will have to solve the mystery of a rare monster that Artemis was hunting when she disappeared—a monster rumored to be so powerful it could destroy Olympus forever.

The Battle of the Labyrinth: As an incoming freshman, Percy isn't expecting his high school orientation to be any fun. But when a mysterious mortal acquaintance appears, followed by demon cheerleaders, things quickly move from bad to worse. In this fourth installment of the blockbuster series, time is running out as war between the Olympians and the evil Titan lord Kronos draws near. Even the safe haven of Camp Half Blood grows more vulnerable by the minute as Kronos's army prepares to invade its once impenetrable borders. To stop them, Percy and his demigod friends will set out on a quest through the Labyrinth—a sprawling underground world with stunning surprises at every turn. Full of humor and heart-pounding action, this fourth book promises to be their most thrilling adventure yet.

The Last Olympian: All year the half-bloods have been preparing for battle against the Titans, knowing the odds of victory are grim. Kronos's army is stronger than ever, and with every god and half-blood he recruits, the evil Titan's power only grows. While the Olympians struggle to contain the rampaging monster Typhon, Kronos begins his advance on New York City, where Mount Olympus stands virtually unguarded. Now it's up to Percy Jackson and an army of young demigods to stop the Lord of Time. In this momentous final book in the New York Times best-selling Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, the long-awaited prophecy surrounding Percy's sixteenth birthday unfolds. And as the battle for Western civilization rages on the streets of Manhattan, Percy faces a terrifying suspicion that he may be fighting against his own fate.

My Review: Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan is a creative, fun, and entertaining story based on the Greek Mythology. The characters were hard not to like and had a voice that felt real. This series is not only entertaining and fun, it is also educational with the little fun facts here and there about Greek Mythology. The many pages are filled with action, friendship, loyalty, courage, sacrifices, and so much more! I highly recommend others to read this series for is not one you would want to miss.

Book Review: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (Book 1 to the Percy Jackson & the Olympians Series)

About the Book: Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school... again. And that's the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he's angered a few of them. Zeus' master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.

Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus' stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves

My Review:  Rick Riordan has taken the characters from Greek Mythology and turned them into a book that is both entertaining and slightly educational.  The Lightning Thief is an outstanding novel.   From the struggles the demigods go through to survive life to the creatures such as satyrs, minotaur, and dryads- this novel is enticing.  Thrown in angry Gods like Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades that threaten to go to war if Percy cannot retrieve the Zeus's possession, and you will not be able to put the book down.

Book Review: Torn by Amanda Hocking (Book 2 of the Trylle Trilogy)

About the Book: When Wendy Everly first discovers the truth about herself—that she’s a changeling switched at birth—she knows her life will never be the same. Now she’s about to learn that there’s more to the story…

She shares a closer connection to her Vittra rivals than she ever imagined—and they’ll stop at nothing to lure her to their side. With the threat of war looming, her only hope of saving the Trylle is to master her magical powers—and marry an equally powerful royal. But that means walking away from Finn, her handsome bodyguard who’s strictly off limits…and Loki, a Vittra prince with whom she shares a growing attraction.

Torn between her heart and her people, between love and duty, Wendy must decide her fate. If she makes the wrong choice, she could lose everything, and everybody, she’s ever wanted…in both worlds.

My Review:  The second Trylle novel, Torn, is just as great as the first.  Secrets begin to unravel and reveal themselves, whether people want them to or not.  Wendy has to make the choice of following duty or her heart, with each pulling her in different directions, along with the two troll kingdoms.

Torn is an enticing novel filled with love, passion, duty, magic, and sacrifices.  Everything comes down to Wendy and what her choice will be in the end, for she holds the balance in her hands for both troll kingdoms.  From page one, Torn had me hooked.  I cannot wait until I get the chance to read the next novel to the Trylle Trilogy!  4/5 STARS

Book Review: Switched by Amanda Hocking (Book one of the Trylle Trilogy)

About the Book: When Wendy Everly was six years old, her mother was convinced she was a monster and tried to kill her. Eleven years later, Wendy discovers her mother might have been right.  She’s not the person she’s always believed herself to be, and her whole life begins to unravel—all because of Finn Holmes.

Finn is a mysterious guy who always seems to be watching her.  Every encounter leaves her deeply shaken…though it has more to do with her fierce attraction to him than she’d ever admit.  But it isn’t long before he reveals the truth:  Wendy is a changeling who was switched at birth—and he’s come to take her home.

Now Wendy’s about to journey to a magical world she never knew existed, one that’s both beautiful and frightening.  And where she must leave her old life behind to discover who she’s meant to become…

My Review: Switched by Amanda Hocking is an outstanding novel. It's a refreshing story away from the usual witches, vampires, werewolves, etc... but it still holds the paranormal appeal with Trolls. The characters are very likable and the story line is interesting.  Hocking added enough twists and drama with humor to keep the novel from becoming dull.  I can not wait for the next to this promising trilogy.

Book Review: Matched by Ally Condie

About the book: Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black. The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

*** Book description found at Amazon.com ***

My Review:  Imagine that something happened in the world that ended our choices. A society forms that chooses everything for you; where you live, where you work, who you'll marry, and how long you live. When life becomes a game of probability and chances of things occurring, what do you do? Especially when you find yourself wanting things that you shouldn't. Ally Condie has created a world in this book that is fascinating, and the real kick to it is that it could actually happen in the future. Her character Cassia goes through so many changes and has to make many difficult choices that don't just affect her, but all those around her. This book was outstanding and brilliant! 5/5 STARS

Book Review: Department 19 by Will Hill

About the book: Jamie Carpenter's life will never be the same. His father is dead, his mother is missing, and he was just rescued by an enormous man named Frankenstein. Jamie is brought to Department 19, where he is pulled into a secret organization responsible for policing the supernatural, founded more than a century ago by Abraham Van Helsing and the other survivors of Dracula. Aided by Frankenstein's monster, a beautiful vampire girl with her own agenda, and the members of the agency, Jamie must attempt to save his mother from a terrifyingly powerful vampire.

Department 19 takes us through history, across Europe, and beyond - from the cobbled streets of Victorian London to prohibition-era New York, from the icy wastes of Arctic Russia to the treacherous mountains of Transylvania. Part modern thriller, part classic horror, it's packed with mystery, mayhem, and a level of suspense that makes a Darren Shan novel look like a romantic comedy.

*** Book description found at Amazon.com ***

My Review: Department 19 was an interesting book. It's was different than what I've read lately, but pretty good. There are some slow parts throughout the book, but nothing to extreme. The book tells a story of how things are after Dracula was killed and how it all comes to luring a teenage boy, Jamie Carpenter, into fighting against evil. He will do anything to get his mother back from the bloodsucking fiends, with the help of the Frankenstein monster and a vampire who was suppose to kill him, he enters a new world of nightmares. As secrets are unraveled and people who you trust deceive you, you'll have to look to yourself for survival. 3/5 STARS

Book Review: Witches of East End by Melissa de la Cruz

About the book: The three Beauchamp women--Joanna and her daughters Freya and Ingrid--live in North Hampton, out on the tip of Long Island. Their beautiful, mist-shrouded town seems almost stuck in time, and all three women lead seemingly quiet, uneventful existences. But they are harboring a mighty secret--they are powerful witches banned from using their magic. Joanna can resurrect people from the dead and heal the most serious of injuries. Ingrid, her bookish daughter, has the ability to predict the future and weave knots that can solve anything from infertility to infidelity. And finally, there's Freya, the wild child, who has a charm or a potion that can cure most any heartache.
For centuries, all three women have been forced to suppress their abilities. But then Freya, who is about to get married to the wealthy and mysterious Bran Gardiner, finds that her increasingly complicated romantic life makes it more difficult than ever to hide her secret. Soon Ingrid and Joanna confront similar dilemmas, and the Beauchamp women realize they can no longer conceal their true selves. They unearth their wands from the attic, dust off their broomsticks, and begin casting spells on the townspeople. It all seems like a bit of good-natured, innocent magic, but then mysterious, violent attacks begin to plague the town. When a young girl disappears over the Fourth of July weekend, they realize it's time to uncover who and what dark forces are working against them.
With a brand-new cast of characters, a fascinating and fresh world to discover, and a few surprise appearances from some of the Blue Blood fan favorites, this is a page-turning, deliciously fun, magical summer read fraught with love affairs, witchcraft, and an unforgettable battle between good and evil.

*** Book description found at Amazon.com ***

My Review: I was so excited to receive this book- I loved the Blue Blood series and had high expectations for this one.

To be honest, I was sort of disappointed with how this one turned out. This book seemed to drag on for me and I wasn't able to read very much for a long period of time. The idea of the story and the characters are easily likable which is why I gave it a 3 star rating instead of a 2. I felt that there could have been so much more put into the book and it was just missing things.

This book is a good for a one time read... 3/5 STARS

But, when Brett finds herself stranded in the wilderness, the only thing that matters is survival.

*** Book description found at Amazon.com ***

My Review: I was lucky to win the chance to receive the e-book. I'm not a big fan of e-books, because it really annoys me to read books on a computer, but I requested this one anyways and I'm happy that I did.

Verita is quite an interesting novel. I found myself completely drawn into the story and couldn't stop reading until I finished. This book has an interesting and new storyline than others I have recently read. The characters are easily likeable and fun to "listen" to.

The thought of having a tragedy strike you down in life and being offered a chance to move on and do something better with your life is so tempting, especially to Brett after losing so much. Not only does she get to put the past behind her and move onto her future, she's given a chance that most people could only dream of. She receives a new home, a job, adventure, great friends, and finds love and lust. She faces difficulties, but she learns to face them head on and with her head held high.  4/5 STARS

Book Review: The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins (Includes: The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockinjay)

About the book:

Hunger Games: In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before-and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love

Catching Fire: Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

Mockingjay:  Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins’s groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year.

Book Review: Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers (Book 1 of His Fair Assassion Trilogy)

About the book: Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf? Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.
Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

*** Book description found at Amazon.com ***

My Review: Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers is an enticing novel.  It's refreshing from vampires, werewolves, etc...  Not only is the story idea and plot quite riveting, but the characters and flow of the novel doesn't disappoint either.  I couldn't seem to put Grave Mercy down until I reached the end.  This is definitely a novel I would recommend others to read- to take on the task with Ismae and Duval of ensuring the duchess is officially crowned, whether she is wedded or not.  Add in Death's handmaiden assassins and you have a truly sensational novel. 4/5 STARS
