Book Review: The City of the Gods by Joseph Robert Lewis (Book two of the Chimera Series)

A little about the book:  Asha of Kathmandu, a wandering healer possessed by the spirit of a raging dragon, arrives in the great city of Alexandria where she joins forces with the fox witch Wren, the airship engineer Taziri, and the immortal knight Gideon to save the living gods of Aegyptus from an ancient evil. The immortal Lilith has come to the city to terrorize its people, and to twist them into hideous, monstrous slaves to serve her cruel desires.

Many heroes have come to defeat Lilith, but the one person who knows all her secrets is the first to be lost. To make matters worse, Asha's new ally Anubis has a dark agenda of his own. And if Asha cannot control her own grief and rage at the evils she has seen, the dragon's soul that dwells within her may consume her utterly, transforming her into the most devastating monster of all.

Inhuman creatures rampage across Alexandria, and battles rage from the city streets to the night skies, and from the great lighthouse down into the vast necropolis hidden beneath the earth. But this is a battle that cannot be won with weapons, no matter how otherworldly, if Asha is to also save her own sanity and bring peace to the city of the gods.

My Review: What can I say about 'The City of the Gods'?  This book is fun and entertaining- there is never a boring moment that feels slow paced and that seems to drag on and on.  How could there be with immortals who tamper around with human and animal souls, a girl who can call upon the power of a dragon- and has trouble controlling that power, fights to the death between relatives and friends, and friendships that could last forever- literally.  The characters are all unique and each have their own voice.  The story is an exciting adventure that captivates the reader.

Joseph Robert Lewis has created a world that is both quite unique and magical.  This book is definitely one that I would recommend others to read, along with the first book, 'The Dragon and the Lotus'.
4/5 STARS
